High expectations, strong outcomes: Copthorne Primary praised in latest Ofsted inspection

Copthorne Primary School, part of Exceed Academies Trust, is celebrating a very positive outcome following its latest Ofsted inspection in January 2026, with inspectors confirming that the school is operating at a strong standard across key areas.

The report highlights the school’s ambitious culture, strong leadership and inclusive approach, recognising the impact of staff, pupils and the wider Trust in delivering high-quality education.

Strong outcomes and a culture of ambition

Inspectors found that pupils at Copthorne achieve very well, with outcomes in reading, writing and mathematics consistently above national averages.

They also noted that pupils “learn the curriculum confidently” and produce high-quality work across a wide range of subjects, reflecting a well-planned and ambitious curriculum.

This success is underpinned by a culture of high expectations, with external coverage noting that these expectations “permeate classrooms and corridors.”

A calm, purposeful and positive environment

The report identifies behaviour and attendance as clear strengths. Pupils are described as calm, respectful and focused, with consistent expectations set by staff across the school.

Attendance is also strong, supported by effective monitoring and prompt action where needed. Pupils enjoy school, take pride in their work and contribute positively to the school community.

Inclusion at the heart of the school

Copthorne’s inclusive ethos was singled out as a key strength. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), as well as disadvantaged pupils, are well supported and achieve highly alongside their peers.

Inspectors recognised the school’s targeted support, strong partnership with families and effective work in removing barriers to learning.

Strong leadership and effective governance

Leadership was praised for its clear focus and determination, with inspectors noting leaders are “tenacious in the pursuit of excellence and equality for all”.

Governors and trustees were also recognised for providing effective support and challenge, ensuring that school improvement remains sharply focused and impactful.

The report also highlights the benefits of working within Exceed Academies Trust, including opportunities for staff to collaborate, share expertise and develop professionally.

Supporting every child to thrive

Personal development is a real strength at Copthorne. Pupils benefit from a well-designed programme that helps them understand relationships, safety, equality and life in modern Britain.

Inspectors found that pupils leave the school as confident, independent young people, well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Safeguarding culture recognised

The report confirms that safeguarding arrangements are effective, with a strong culture in which pupils feel safe, supported and able to share any concerns with trusted adults.

Headteacher and Trust response

Headteacher Stephanie Ngenda said:

“I am incredibly proud of this report, which reflects the hard work, dedication and care shown by our staff every day. It is wonderful to see our pupils’ achievements, behaviour and attitudes recognised so positively.”

Duncan Jacques, Chief Executive Officer of Exceed Academies Trust, added:

“This report is a fantastic reflection of the high expectations, strong leadership and inclusive culture at Copthorne Primary School.”

Looking ahead

As part of its commitment to continuous improvement, the school is focused on further strengthening early years practice and supporting younger pupils to fully secure key writing skills before moving on to more complex learning.

Leaders have already identified these priorities and are progressing targeted actions.

Summary

This inspection outcome confirms that Copthorne Primary School continues to provide a high-quality, inclusive education, where pupils achieve well, feel safe and are supported to thrive.

The Trust would like to thank all staff, pupils, families and governors for their continued commitment and contribution to the success of the school.
